Basketball tournament helps raise funds for school in Somalia
The basketball tournament at Ridgemont and St. Patrick’s high schools is the most recent of Const. Mahamud Elmi’s fundraising events to build an English-language school in his hometown Bursalah, Somalia. Thanks to Mr. Steve Lerner and Lise Lerner

On behalf of Hope Academy foundation, we would like to thank Mr. Steve Lerner and his wife Mrs. Lise Lerner for their generous donation of $5,000.
Your contribution makes it possible for us to build this school that benefits children who are in desperate situation and do not have access to basic education. Since its inception in September, 2008, Hope Academy Foundation has conducted several charity events to raise funds to build the School.
Mr. Lerner, you have challenged us to get to $20,000 so that you donate $5,000 to the school. This made us determined and gave us more motivation to raise funds to achieve our goal. Once again thank you for your generous donation.
Your assistance means so much to us, but even more to the children that will be attending Hope Academy when it's built.
Sincerely,
Hope Academy Foundation Team

Ottawa officer strives to give ‘hope’ to hometown
OTTAWA — Ottawa police Const. Mahamud Elmi wants to build a school, and so, like any respectable builder, he’s compiled a list of things he’ll need, starting with materials such as cement, bricks, doors, electrical wiring, toilets, windows, desks and blackboards. Also on his list are: cheap labour, a project manager, permits and a security guard. Eventually, too, he knows he’ll also need teachers, administration, books and school supplies. Read More
Cops went to bat for Somali school
The fundraising drive started Saturday september 20th 2008 with the inaugural Softball Tournament for Somali Schools at Carlington Park, which was attended by police officers, firefighters, members of the Canadian Forces and others.
The goal of the event was to raise up to $10,000, and organizers got about a third or more of the way there.
"It's not going to be easy," admits Elmi, who spent about four years in a Kenyan refugee camp before immigrating to Canada with his aunt in 1996, forced to leave his parents behind in Somalia.
He knows there will be obstacles and challenges but believes if "we work hard at it, we'll be able to overcome them."
